| what up family. this whole break i didn't really have much to write about... until now. i was thumbing through this weekends news articles and i came across this piece that spoke on video translation services in hospitals. the writer interviewed this one lady name yeh lingling who tangentially broke off into a sermonette on how America shouldn't provide health services to illegal immigrants etc. she's some leader of a non-profit organization called "Diversity Alliance for a Sustainable America" whose mission is to reduce immigration such that America will be "sustainable." she targets illegal immigration mostly. so, i read the website- i laughed, i cried and decided to send in a little opinion. thought i'd post it for yall.
Dear Ms. Ling Ling,
In reading the article regarding video translation services in Alameda county, and subsequently reading the information provided by your organization's website, I'm honestly appalled at the positionality and mission of your organization. I feel that your gaze at immigration is acritical and truly decontextualizes itself from the global realities of the United State's imperialist agenda. Immigration is a global production, embedded between the continuum of neo-liberalism and war. Born from this colonialism is the "illegal immigrant" and the "refugee"- two political identities that you mention on your website. I wonder why your organization isn't critical of this production of immigrants; instead choosing to impose an individual responsibility narrative that has historically veiled social responsibility. Your acknowledgement that "immigrants can be assets," in my opinion, is at best a trivial comment deeply grounded in historical amnesia. I believe that there exists more humanizing solutions to the so-called "immigration problem" than "contacting the media" or "contacting the president."
In my opinion, this "immigration situation" is yet another moment in our history where communities of color have been pitted against each other through the mechanism of structural racism. Perhaps I am an optimist, but I hope that we could trace social problems beyond the individual in our continual struggle for social justice. Thanks for reading.
Sincerely,
Roger Viet Chung
To this she replies... and i did not fabricate this. She wrote this for sheezy.
Hi Mr. Chung: Read the following quotes and tell me what you think. As you know (or you may not know), many people within the same racial and ethnic backgrounds do not like each other. For instance, many Chinese from China cannot stand those from Hong Kong who don't like those from Taiwan who don't feel any kinship those from other parts of the world. Do you think that many Chinese get along well with other non-Chinese, such as Mexicans, blacks, whites, etc.?
Mario Obledo, co-founder of MALDEF, publicly said in 1998 that in the next 5 to 10 years, California is going to become a Hispanic state. He went on by saying that "anyone who does not like Mexicans should leave. They should go back to Europe."
Do you think that Chinese Americans who don't like Mexicans would like to be told to go back to China?
I wish to remind you that I used to work for immigration law firms for 10 years, helping people immigrate to the U.S.
Wake up. Don't turn the U.S. into another China or Mexico.
Yeh Ling-Ling ============================= Eye-opening quotes of leaders of Mexican descent:
"We are practicing La Reconquista in California." --Jose Pescador Osuna,
then Mexican Consul General
"I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders and that Mexican migrants are an important - a very important - part of this." -- then Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo*, Chicago on July 23, 1997.
"The American Southwest seems to be slowly returning to the jurisdiction
of Mexico without firing a single shot." --Excelsior- The national newspaper of Mexico.
"Mexico is recovering the territories yielded to the United States by means of migratory tactics." -- Elena Poniatowska, prize-winning Mexican novelist who has taught at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, etc.
"A secessionist movement is not something that you can put away and say it is never going to happen in the United States. Time and history change." – UC Riverside Professor Armando Navarro **.
"As goes the Latino population will go the state of California, and as goes the state of California will go the United States of America. My friends, the stakes are big. This is a fight worth making." – Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros*** at a Hispanic
conference in 1995.
"Eventually, we are going to take over all the political institutions of
California.... Anyone who does not like Mexicans should leave. They should go back to Europe" -- Mario Obledo ****, co-founder and President
of MALDEF, 1968 to 1973; President of the League of United Latin American Citizens 1983-85, California State Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare 1975-82, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
by Bill Clinton
"Remember 187 (proposition to deny taxpayer funds for services to illegal aliens) was the last gasp of white America in California." -- Art Torres, Chairman of the California Democratic Party
"They're afraid we're going to take over the governmental institutions and other institutions. They're right. We will take them over. …. We are
here to stay." --Richard Alatorre, Los Angeles City Council
"We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population.….. I love it. They are shitting in their pants with fear. I love it.", "We have got to eliminate the gringo, and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him."-- Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas. ------------- Notes:
* In June 2002, a Zogby poll showed that 58 percent of Mexicans living in Mexico believed the U.S. Southwest rightfully belongs to them and 57 percent of Mexicans did not believe that they need U.S. permission to
enter this country.
** Harvard Professor Samuel P. Huntington, author of the best-seller, "Clash of Civilizations, has written that high Mexican immigration is a "threat to American social security. Mexican Professor Charles Truxillo has publicly stated with confidence that the U.S. Southwest's secession is an "inevitability" due to continued high Hispanic immigration. On June 21, 2002, he said on the national TV show Hannity
& Colmes that "the U.S. Southwest will secede and may rejoin Mexico." He even stated
on the air: "No nation's borders have been permanent. Throughout history, nations and empires rise and fall."
*** In the last decade, the Hispanic population exploded in the U.S. Even in North Carolina, it increased by more than 600 percent. Hispanics now have outnumbered
blacks as this nation's largest minority group.
**** In 1998, Obledo publicly predicted that "in the next 5 to 10 years, California is going to be a Hispanic state, and anyone who doesn't like it should leave. They should go back to Europe." In early 2003, a study by UCLA found that 52.5% of the babies born in California now are Hispanics.
Yes she did. I kid you not. Anyway, I shot back telling her that she should change her organizations name from "Diversity Alliance for a Sustainable America" to "Anti-Mexican Racist League" noting that i didn't think that "diversity" wasn't the appropriate diction. I'll post my response soon.
i hope all is doing well. for the bored, thanks for reading. my summer has suddenly become frustrating yet entertaining. |
